Spitting Distance

Spitting Distance are a theatre company dedicated to creating theatre that examines the social and political factors that define how we experience, interact and exist in the world today. As artists we feel that we have a responsibility to produce work that responds to seismic events that impact on our lives and to filter this work through our generations perspective and understanding of the world.

We want to create work for young adults living in a new digital age. We believe in creating theatre that blends awareness of the past and of our diverse cultural heritages. Our work will get under the skin of a generation perpetually living for the moment by creating work with an historical consciousness.

We devise theatre that is epic in scope, but intimate and personal in terms of focus. By assembling a large body of material, ranging from existing texts to images taken from visual art and film, then merging that research with new writing and staging, we wish to shake our generation from their apathetic and inert state of virtual self-expression, to a state of active social awareness.

With an emphasis on digitality and the work being media driven, we will create total theatre that pushes the potential of multi-media technology and that integrates it seamlessly into the theatrical narrative. We will devise work that is noisy, fast-paced and busy, with a great sense of tempo and rhythm; theatre that has the liveness and energy of a gig.

The digitalised world we in live has caused rapid exchanges in information that overloads our reflexes and ability to make sound moral judgments. Spitting Distance tells stories that attempt capture the imaginations and social conscious of a generation saturated by reality entertainment. Our work captures the spirit of the past and issues of the present in order to challenge our audience to reflect on the conditions of their lives.
